Limerence 04:06

about

Contemporary Classical Compositions, January to February 2023.

The Philosophers is a three movement suite of pieces the material for which is derived from the speech patterns of Foucault and Chomsky, Deleuze, and Badiou. Presented here without the speakers, versions with the relevent lectures embedded are available on youtube.

The Octatonal Fugue is a comment on the lived experience of the pandemic, and perhaps a little bit of an in joke for composers. Not only is it monothematic, but by using one of Messiaen's modes of limited transposition it remains virtually static, harmonically speaking.

Limerence is an exploration of obsession, whether it be with a person, the muse, or the process of creation. It is a reworking of a much older piece, a solo piano etude in the style of Bartok, but pushed as far into new territories as I could in one hour.
